Day 9, October 25, Ayers Rock

We got up at "oh-dark-30" (about 3:30AM, if I recall correctly) for our visit to Uluru at sunrise. As luck (or absence of) would have it, it was again cloudy and the sun rose behind clouds, dulling the view of Uluru. The tour buses started leaving. Then, all of a sudden, the sun emerged from behind the clouds and granted us a spectacular view - of the sunrise, at least! (I liked the "sunbeams".)

Sunrise at Uluru

I'd like to show you a picture of the "sunrise" side of Uluru, but the aboriginals prohibit taking photos of this side for publication. They don't mind personal photos, and I have some, but I won't display them in public. The various markings, holes and more have significance to the aboriginals of the area - some of the stories they'll tell strangers, some they won't.

Afterwards, we went to the base of Uluru to see caves which had served as classrooms. You can still see paintings on the walls that tell various stories.
